Global Mangrove Alliance Strategy
The Alliance will endeavor to implement its Global Mangrove Strategy to achieve global priorities and actions. It will provide a foundation on which all members will leverage funding, strengthen scienti c research, strengthen coastal management, education, climate mitigation and adaptation related policies, and accelerate conservation and restoration of mangroves. We now have an opportunity to achieve scale above and beyond the capacity of any individual organization.

Global Mangrove Alliance Fact Sheet
Mangrove forests are some of the world’s most valuable coastal ecosystems. They serve as a transition between marine and terrestrial environments and provide critical protection from the impacts of climate change, often for some of the world’s most vulnerable people, by attenuating wave energy and storm surges, adapting to rising sea levels, and stabilizing shorelines from erosion. Mangrove forests are also an incredible source of carbon sequestration and storage, giving them an important role in climate mitigation. In addition, these ecosystems are essential to maintaining fisheries, improving water quality, and conserving unique biodiversity and cultural identity.

Despite the many benefits that these ecosystems provide, they are being destroyed at an alarming rate, largely due to human- led deforestation and clearing. In the past half century, 50% of global mangroves have been lost. Restoring and conserving these vital ecosystems is key to sustaining both coastal communities and biodiversity. And because investing in mangroves has such wide-ranging benefits, their protection is a key pathway to meeting the ambitious outcomes laid out in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris climate agreement.
