MAPCO
A legacy of science and traditional knowledge to conserve our wetlands
by INVEMAR, Colombia
“Mangroves, seagrasses, and local communities: the development and exchange of experiences of integrated management of biodiversity and its services in the Caribbean region“, referred to as MAPCO (MAPCO – ENV/2016/ 380-526), has been co-financed by the European Union and co-executed by INVEMAR, Fundación Natura, local communities, national corporations, and international entities for two purposes 1) to identify best conservation and management strategies for the improvement of livelihoods and food security of communities and 2) to determine where, how, with whom, when, and with what planning tools to create new local Marine Protected Areas or help existing ones implement actions for their governance without losing sight of the impact on national policies and the international communication of their results.
The goals and commitments of this valuable project are reflected today. We are excited to share that we have consolidated MAPCO results, leaving a legacy for the replicability and sustainability of its efforts and results regarding mangroves and seagrasses and the sustainable use of the goods and services they provide to local communities, Colombia, and the wider Caribbean region.
